I recently began thinking about the relationship between good nutrition and mental and physical health.
I witnessed my mother’s health decline in a relatively short amount of time. She became reclusive, got little to no exercise, and became a fall risk.
Her mental health suffered; her physical health suffered. I also realized her food intake had decreased substantially. She could not have been getting a healthy dose of protein and other nutrients from toast!
Over the years, men and women our age have had ongoing love/hate relationships with food. We love to eat it but hate to gain weight! Generally, we understand the importance of eating green leafy vegetables, consuming adequate protein, and reducing our intake of unhealthy trans fats – all important elements for our physical health. But what about the relationship between food and our mental health?
Imagine my surprise to read a well researched article, “The Connection Between Nutrition and Mental Health.”
“Doctors rarely make the connection between diet and mental health. However, nutrition may be even more important for your brain than for the rest of you. It’s a hungry little organ weighing in at just three pounds, yet your brain uses 20 percent of your daily energy expenditure.
There is ample evidence that symptoms of anxiety, depression, and attention disorders, and degenerative diseases like dementia and Alzheimer’s can be dialed up or down depending on the food consumed. There are many ways food affects the brain. There are basic nutritional requirements that must be met to maintain the health of the brain. These nutrients are needed to protect and repair existing brain cells and create new ones.”
I was not surprised but felt a little frustrated. As we get older, some of us have a reduced interest in grocery shopping and planning 3 good nutritious meals a day. Frankly, I hate meal planning, especially when I am planning meals for anyone other than myself. And my mother was not about to start grilling salmon and making a salad each night.
So what is a healthy compromise?
Rather than grabbing something you will regret later why not keep it simple? Have you ever thought about a meal replacement shake? I did some of my own research, talked with a friend who uses shakes as part of her and her husband’s busy day and then tried it for myself.
My research paid off.
Nutrition for Seniors
And now I can ask you a question. What if I showed you how to prepare an easy meal that could…
- Reduce hunger and food cravings
- Promote healthy skin, hair, and nails
- Aid digestion
- Support a healthy intestinal tract
- Increase absorption of nutrients
- Help promote a strong immune system
- Help increase energy
- Help protect the body from stress
- Help balance endocrine hormones and the immune system
- Help neutralize harmful free radicals
- Help decrease inflammation
- Help maintain the immune system
- Support your physical health
- Support your mental health
And what if I told you it’s easy to prepare and tastes great?
Well, I am now drinking a delicious, nutrient-rich, superfood-packed protein shake for lunch.
I am enjoying it so much that I wish I had known about it when my mom stopped preparing proper meals for herself and got ill often because she was not getting enough protein and nutrients.
This product would have been a godsend.
I started drinking Shakeology and lunch time has never been so stress free!
I simply put a scoop of Shakeology in my blender and choose from dozens of ‘recipes’ such as adding almond milk, ice cubes and frozen fruit. I blend it, put it in a large smoothie glass and drink all the ‘good stuff’ I need. In fact, just 15 minutes ago I went to the kitchen to make a shake and realized we had no milk of any kind – not skim or almond milk. Hmm. I took some water, a handful of ice cubes, a cup or so of apple juice, a scoop of strawberry Shakeology and a handful of frozen blueberries. I whipped it up in my handy ninja blender and then poured it into my shaker cup. Voila! I had an instant GREAT tasting lunch in mere minutes.
And I am getting 16 grams of protein, tons of other healthy ingredients, and it’s all under 200 calories. Not bad!
And if I’m on the go, I simply mix it with water!
By the time I have finished drinking one shake I have consumed more than 70 super nutritious ingredients including:
- Proteins, Vitamins, and Minerals – to help reduce hunger and food cravings.
- Antioxidants and Phytonutrients – to help detoxify and protect the body against free radical damage.
- Adaptogen Herbs – to help increase energy and combat stress.
- Prebiotics, Probiotics, Fiber, and Digestive Enzymes – to aid digestion and promote regularity.
Frankly, it’s a no-brainer!
A survey was done with 3,000 Shakeology drinkers and 93% felt healthier; 86% reported improved energy; and 81% felt it reduced their cravings for junk food and helped them feel full longer.
This is an easy way to have a healthy meal with little effort. The end result? Less time in the kitchen leaves you more time to exercise and get moving!
And one last thing. How much does it cost? Well the first time you see the price you might be inclined to say forget it! But stop and think about it like I did. Many readers say their grocery bill has gone down. How many fruits and vegetables (which are getting more and more expensive) would you need to buy to get the nutritional breakdown from 70 nutritious ingredients? How much do you spend on expensive supplements that may be unnecessary with Shakeology? In fact, have a look at the nutrition label:
So, when it comes right down to it, the cost of between $4 and $5 a day is a bargain.
Try it for one month and see for yourself. And remember, if you have a parent you are caring for, a meal a day of Shakeology can provide the missing nutrients they need to stay both physically and mentally healthy.
Trying it for a month is simple! You can get it directly from my friend and Beach Body Coach Lisa Pezik, founder of QuickFitnessSeniors.com. Beach Body is the ONLY distributor for Shakeology. And Lisa told me she would be happy to consult with you if you any questions.
